Asmita Ale: British-Nepali Footballer Making Her Mark with Leicester City Women

British-Nepali footballer Asmita Ale continues to make her mark in English women’s football, representing Leicester City Women while proudly carrying her Nepali heritage onto the professional stage.

Born in Dorset to Nepali parents, Ale has become an important name for the British-Nepali community and for South Asian representation in English football. Her father, Amrit Ale, is a former Gurkha soldier, while both of her parents moved to Britain from Nepal before she was born. Ale has spoken openly about the importance of her Nepali background and the support she has received from her family throughout her football career.

Ale began playing with Aston Villa’s academy at the age of eight and made history when she signed her first professional contract in 2019. She became the first footballer of Nepalese origin to sign a professional contract in English football. She later played for Tottenham Hotspur before initially joining Leicester City on loan and completing a permanent move to the club in 2024.

Continuing Her Journey with Leicester City

Ale remains part of the Leicester City Women first-team squad for the 2026/27 season, wearing the No. 12 shirt. Leicester City confirmed her place in the squad following the summer transfer window.

Her influence has also been evident on the pitch this season. On 13 September 2026, Leicester City Women defeated Durham 4–2, with Ale scoring her second goal for the club as Leicester continued their strong start to the WSL2 campaign.

For many within Britain’s Nepali community, Ale’s journey carries significance beyond football. Her progression from youth football to the professional game has provided visible representation for young British-Nepali and South Asian players who may hope to follow a similar pathway.

Speaking previously about her heritage, Ale has described how Nepali culture remains an important part of her family life and how trips to Nepal during her childhood helped maintain that connection.

With her career continuing at Leicester City, Asmita Ale remains one of the most prominent British footballers of Nepali heritage competing in the English professional game.
